Last Thursday the Omnis Group team exchanged their calculators for aprons and cooked for the Home For Dinner shift at Perth’s Ronald McDonald House.
Home for Dinner invites teams of co-workers, friends and family members into Ronald McDonald House (RMH) to prepare a meal for the families staying there.
RMH provides the kitchen and catering support; the volunteer groups provide the manpower!
Parents of sick kids often return to the House after a long day at the hospital with cooking the last thing on their minds. The Home for Dinner program offers a fun and rewarding experience for volunteers, with the added satisfaction of knowing they are helping to make the families lives a little bit easier.
RMH Coordinators love volunteers who bring a range of ‘soft skills’ and luckily Omnis Group had plenty to offer.
“We got to experience a commercial kitchen run by a professional catering manager,” says Omnis Group Manager Rory Byrne. “We enjoyed a tour around Ronald McDonald House which gave us wonderful insight into its operations. Then we got to sit down with families and enjoy our meal too!”
“You literally pick a date and pick a menu,” says Rory. “On our allotted night we drew recipes out of a hat and did everything from prep to wipe down.”
“If no one else volunteers then Chef Darryl does it all, but it’s far better when many hands make light work. It’s a big facility so they need a lot of help.”
Having all hands on deck makes for improved teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and people skills.
Receptionist Gabby went home so drained yet she thought it was the best thing she’d done in ages! Daniel said it was an opportunity to give back with purpose.
“It was our first time as volunteer cooks and we’d like to do it regularly as everyone is pepped up and really enjoyed it,” added Rory.
“All in all, an excellent reason to get out there and volunteer!”
